A stroke is a serious medical emergency that happens when the blood flow to a part of the brain is suddenly blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. This deprives brain cells of oxygen and nutrients, causing them to die within minutes.
There are two main types of strokes:
- Ischemic Stroke – Caused by a blocked artery (most common type, about 85% of strokes).
- Hemorrhagic Stroke – Caused by a ruptured or leaking blood vessel in the brain.
Common Stroke Symptoms
Recognizing the symptoms of a stroke early can save a life. The quicker a person gets treatment, the better their chances of recovery. Watch out for:
- Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg—especially on one side of the body.
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or understanding speech.
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
- Sudden dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
Act FAST – Time Saves Brain
Use the FAST test to quickly identify a stroke:
- F – Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
- A – Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
- S – Speech: Ask them to repeat a simple sentence. Is the speech slurred or strange?
- T – Time: If you observe any of these signs, call emergency services immediately.
Stroke Risk Factors
Some factors that increase stroke risk include:
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- High cholesterol
- Obesity
- Physical inactivity
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Family history of stroke
Treatment and Recovery
The treatment depends on the type of stroke. Ischemic strokes may be treated with clot-busting medications, while hemorrhagic strokes may require surgery.
Rehabilitation is key to recovery and may include:
- Physical therapy – to regain movement and strength
- Occupational therapy – to relearn daily tasks
- Speech therapy – to improve communication and swallowing
- Counseling – for emotional support and motivation
Recovery can take weeks to months, and early intervention can make a huge difference.
Conclusion
Stroke can affect anyone, at any time. Being aware of the signs and acting FAST can save lives and reduce the chances of permanent disability. If you or someone around you shows any symptoms, don’t wait—get medical help immediately.
